Description

9.5Expert Score
TP Link AC1750 Extender

Rating
9.5
PROS
  • Easy setup
  • Great range
  • Long-range speeds
CONS
  • Bulky
  • Doesn't work with OneMesh

Design

The RE450s glossy white and grey exterior with glowing blue lights looks like something out of a Star Wars movie. The fold-out antennas are convenient and well designed but not removable or adjustable. In size and shape, it resembles a large, very thick smartphone. It’s big and bulky so it can easily be knocked into and it will block the 2nd receptacle in an AC wall outlet. Unfortunately, there is no AC passthrough to compensate for this. The glowing blue circle in front surrounds the WPS setup button and turns red when the signal is too far away. On one side there’s a 1GB Ethernet port and on the other, you’ll find power and reset buttons.

Features

The TP-Link RE450 is a Dual-Band 802.11AC WiFi extender that works with most coax modems and is backward compatible with previous WiFi protocols such as G and N. The 2.4GHz band puts out 450Mbps and the 5GHz band puts out 1,300Mbps for a combined maximum bandwidth of 1,750Mbps.

It offers both WPS and web-based setup. The web interface allows for more detailed setup options. Note: Due to some known security holes in WPS it’s always a good thing to do the initial setup using WPS and then once connected using the web interface to set up passwords and SSIDs.

Performance

In throughput and range tests the TP-Link had some impressive scores. It tested slightly behind the Netgear EX7000 and head of the TP-Link AC750. Given the prices and specs of these three extenders, the tests went exactly as you would expect. The RE450 leads the pack in 30-foot and 50-foot tests. The fact that you can get that kind of performance from a middle of the pack extender is outstanding.

Installation

The initial setup of the RE450 is a snap. Simply plug it into an AC wall outlet near your WiFi router, press the WPS button on your router, and the big round button on the front of the extender. The big blue ring will start blinking. Once it’s solid blue your connected. You can then move the extender to a location between your WiFi router and devices. Optionally you can enter http://tplinkrepeater.net in a web browser to do some more detailed configuration such as creating unique SSIDs and passwords for each band and selecting security protocols.

Conclusion

The TP-Link RE450 WiFi Extender offers exceptional range and speed at a reasonable price. The easy installation makes it a no brainer. This perfect cost to benefit ratio makes it the WiFi Guys Editors Choice for WiFi Extenders. The only glaring deficiency is the lack of OneMesh support that would make this the perfect extender for owners of TP-Link WiFi routers. A pass-through port for AC outlets would also be nice.
