ASUS ROG Rapture WiFi 6 Gaming Router (GT-AX11000) - Tri-Band 10 Gigabit Wireless Router, 1.8GHz Quad-Core CPU, WTFast, 2.5G Port, AiMesh Compatible, Included Lifetime Internet Security, AURA RGB

Not too long ago we referred to the ASUS RT5300 gaming router as “overkill.” It seemed there would never be a gaming router with more impressive specs. Well, never say never. With the advent of WiFi6 technology, Asus was able to inject the newer technology into similar hardware as the RT5300, add a few GHz of processing power (1.4GHz Quad-core processor to 1.8GHz Quad-core processor) and produce a behemoth that runs circles around the previous King Of The Hill.

Just glancing at the number of zeros in the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000’s name lets you know you’re not dealing with any off-the-shelf gaming router. The ROG sports two 5GHz “AX” bands that produce 4.8Gps each and a third 2.4GHz “AC” band that produces 1.2Gbps. That all adds up to a whopping 10.8Gpbs. Powered by Broadcom’s BCM43684 Wi-Fi chip, The GT-AX11000 creates a tri-band 802.11ax network (WiFi 6) that taps into the latest wireless techniques, including Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), dynamic frequency selection, and the ability to use any of 15 5GHz bands for the clearest signal. Designed with gamers in mind, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 is the Wi-Fi 6 router to get for those who need to fill a large house with Wi-Fi.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Design

Like its Wi-Fi5’s predecessor the Asus Rog Rapture GT-AX11000’s aggressive, angular curves with the ROG logo lit up in LED lights resemble a prehistoric, alien insect more than a boring piece of networking hardware. AT 9.4in x 9.4in x 2.8in high the ROG is huge. It’s designed to show off its technological prowess and has no interest in politely blending in with your household’s decor. As scary as it looks it still has soft rubber feet on the bottom to avoid scratching your furniture. The eight screw-on antennas can swivel and are so integral to the design of the device you’ll probably never want to upgrade them. You’ll have to find horizontal shelf space for this beast because unfortunately, Asus did not supply the provisions to mount it on a wall. The front row of LED indicator lights alerts you to which WiFi bands are active, LAN and WAN data rates, and the status of WPS. There are also physical switches for turning Wi-Fi on and off, setting up WPS, and using the Boost feature. The reset button is recessed to prevent you from accidentally blowing away all your hard-earned configuration settings. In addition to the usual 4 GB Ethernet ports and WAN broadband connection, you’ll find a 2.5GB fast wired connection that reinforces the idea that the best connection for gaming is hard-wired. As we stated earlier the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 rocks two 5 GHz WiFi6 bands, a single 2.4GHz WiFi5 band, a quad-core 1.8GHz processor, and 256MB of flash memory. The downside to all this hardware superiority is all the advantages of WiFi6 do you no good without WiFi6 clients. That means either upgrading your WiFi5 clients or at the very least getting WiFi6 adapters for them.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Features

The ROGs 8 antennas and 4 x 4 technology can support up to 4 huge concurrent spatial streams of WiFi6 goodness. Of course, they support MU-MIMO technology which allows those 8 antennas to communicate with multiple Wi-Fi devices simultaneously. The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 is no mundane piece of networking equipment. If you’re looking for an unobtrusive router that sits inconspicuously on a shelf, this is quite the opposite. The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 is a horizontal router with no less than eight antennas that surround its chunky, square body, two per side. Its 3.8-pound weight may even be too much for more delicate shelves. In addition to its supercharged wireless performance, the GT-AX11000 comes with a 2.5G WAN/LAN port for up to 2.5X faster data transfers than regular Ethernet. For added convenience, a customizable button on the front of the router allows you instant control of the function of your choices such as Aura RGB lighting, Game Boost, or the DFS bands.

Software and Security

Yes the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 is a gaming router and it has the software to prove it. Gamers can use the included GPN client software to register their router with their favorite games such as World of Tanks, Hearthstone, and League of Legends. Once registering with the ASUS Gamers Private Network gamers can use the router’s “Game Boost” feature to lower latency and eliminate lost packets. The GPN does not allow for the same geo-filtering the Netgear Nighthawk XR500 and XR700 do. The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 can create a mesh network with other Asus wireless routers using its AiMesh technology. It takes just a few minutes to set up and is compatible with a nice handful of other wireless routers. You can expect to need to upgrade your firmware to get it to reach its full functionality. Quality of Service (QoS) is one of the most important features of a gaming router. It allows you to prioritize the traffic on your network in order to let the other Wi-Fi devices know who’s boss. The Adaptive QoS interface is about as graphical and easy to use as it gets. You can also use the built-in Parental Controls to set scheduled time limits for when other users can connect to the network and prevent younger family members from accessing objectionable material. The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 employs Security Scan software to sniff out vulnerabilities and malicious websites. The Trend Micro software controls encryption, an optional DMZ, and even password complexity.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Performance

The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 maximum’s output of 10.8 puts it up there with the fastest gaming routers in the world. This makes it difficult to make a direct comparison with other WiFi6 routers. When compared to other WiFi5 wireless routers such as the TP-Link Archer C5400X it was slightly slower at 15 feet but gradually pulled away from the C5400X at 100 feet. In testing the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 just barely managed to fill a 3,500-square-foot home with Wi-Fi. The range seems to max out at about 90-95 feet which is a few yards less than the Netgear Nighthawk XR500 Pro Gaming router. That should not be discouraging though because the point of this router is performance and not long distance. Most of its resources are reserved for the 2 5GHZ bands that traditionally have less range and more speed than the 2.4GHz band.

Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX1000 Setup

Yes, most gamers are very technical creatures and fully capable of accessing a wireless router’s web interface, doing the basic setup, and making basic configuration changes. If you’re new at wireless router configuration you’ll find just about everything you need to know in my “wireless setup video.” If you don’t feel like bothering with manual set up the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 can be set up quickly and easily by downloading and installing the Asus Router app onto an Android or IOS device. Most of the setup using the app is automatic but it will ask for your input for the admin password and the network names and passwords for each of your 3 data bands. Setup can usually be completed in about 5 minutes.

Configuration

One of the most important differences between “regular” wireless routers and gaming routers is the amount of customization gaming routers allow. The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 provides an extremely graphic and intuitive interface that allows gamers to monitor and change settings from basic WiFi settings to limiting bandwidth for certain devices, blacklisting and forwarding ports to their heart’s content. You can also keep an eye on useful network traffic statistics and even a network diagnosis program that tests your network for network faults. Despite all these wonderful configuration options the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 somehow lacks the ability to set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or adjust transmission signal strength. Perhaps a future firmware upgrade is in the works.

Verdict

The obvious elephant in the room with the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 is its price. That’s one big elephant. One possible motivation for purchasing this beast could be bragging rights and the pride of owning the fastest router on the planet (For now anyway.) The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 comes with a one-year limited warranty that covers you for any manufacturer faults. That’s more than you get with other routers of this caliber that make you pay extra for a warranty. Take WiFi6 off the table and in terms of throughput, range, and dealing with obstructions the TP-Link Archer C5400X slightly outperformed the ROG for nearly half the price. Of course, once WiFi6 devices become more commonplace gaming routers like the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 will pull away from the pack and make their presence known.
