TP-Link Archer A9 Performance
The TP-Link AC1900 Archer A9 improvements over the A7 are not limited to MU-MIMO and Beamforming alone. The Archer A9 also uses a greatly improved chipset and upgraded RAM. These two additions greatly improve throughput which is important to immersive graphics and 4K video sessions.
The 5GHz WiFi radio is powered by the Qualcomm QCA998 – a Wave-2 802.11ac radio with a reputation for WiFi speed and stability. As if all these improvements aren’t enough TP-Link added Smart Connect to the mix. SmartConnect keeps slower devices on their own band in order to prevent them from slowing down faster devices.
The end result is a new and improved device that outperforms the Archer A7, the Tenda AC18, and even TP-Link’s own Archer C9.
The TP-Link Archer A9 looks identical to its little brother the A7. The design is practical and not intended to be flashy The shiny piano black surface will complement any decor. Three antennas are exposed while a fourth is hidden inside. There is only one USB port and 4 1GB LAN ports in the back.
TP-Link Archer A9 Features
The TP-Link Archer A9 supports more features than just about any wireless router you’ll find for less than $100. Those features include the usual Parental controls, Guest Network, USB sharing, and firewall features. In addition, the A9 supports OpenVPN which allows you to set up a VPN server and access your home network from anywhere, QOS which allows you to prioritize certain devices over others, and TP-Link cloud Services which allow you to monitor and manage your home network from anywhere.
The Archer A9 can also be easily configured to behave as an access point. This means you can use it with another router to extend your wireless network with the click of a button instead of getting into all sorts of confusing settings changes needed on routers without this capability. A firmware upgrade may also be in the works to make the TP-Links version of Mesh called OneMesh available on the A9.
Archer A9 Installation
Those who are new to home networking will appreciate the intuitive and beautifully designed web interface. Years ago the thought of wireless router configuration actually being an enjoyable experience seemed far-fetched. How things have changed! The settings to access all this router’s functions are easy to find and understand. Even if you know nothing about wireless networking the Setup Wizard makes the initial setup a breeze.
