Description
The Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P is a high-performance, tri-band wireless router that delivers the speed and coverage you need to stream and game without interruption. Its performance and features allow you to enjoy smooth HD video without lag or buffering, and you get the maximum speed and range possible for multiple devices.
Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P – Design
The design of the Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P is unique. It’s sleek and modern, with a minimalist aesthetic and a sleek, black metallic finish. It’s average in size at 11.0 x 9.0 x 2.1-inch inches. The router has six antennas that fold back into its body and become almost invisible for better portability. The router is designed to be compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. At the time of its release, the Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P was one of the most advanced routers on the market and can be considered the “Big Daddy” of the Netgear Nighthawk series. It can handle any type of internet connection, including cable, DSL, or even satellite. It is one of the best routers for gaming, with a powerful 1.7GHz dual-core processor and 256Mb of RAM. Down the center of the router are familiar LED indicators for power, internet activity, Wi-Fi activity, LAN activity, and even USB activity. There’s also a WPS button and a button to turn Wi-Fi on or off without the pain of having to log into the router’s web interface. In the back, you’ll find 4 1GB Ethernet ports, a WAN port, and two USB ports – 2.0 and 3.0.
High-End Features
The Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P is a Tri-Band 3X3 router that uses the Wireless-AC standard (Wi-Fi 5) to reach speeds of up to 1625Mbps on each of its 5GHz bands and 750Mbps on the 2.4GHz band for a whopping total of 4,000Mbps. Both of its Wi-Fi bands support MU-MIMO and Beamforming for stable, simultaneous connections to multiple devices. It has a 1.8GHz dual-core processor with 128MB of flash memory and 512MB of RAM. More than enough to handle most games and 4K online streaming sessions. Netgear’s popular ReadySHARE Vault network storage software allows you to set up file sharing to an attached USB hard drive or use it as a personal cloud drive.
Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P – Configuration
The Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P has a wide range of configuration options that can be accessed with the Netgear Genie desktop or mobile app. The mobile app leaves a lot to be desired as it requires a login account and has a history of flakiness and instability. Your best bet is with the traditional web interface that gives you status indicators of your Internet speed, and full control over Wi-Fi settings, Guest Networking, Parental Controls, the ReadySHARE service, and connected devices. You can also provide distinct names (SSIDs) to your three separate networks if you desire.
The advanced section allows you to configure Port Forwarding, Port Aggregation, VPN services, static routers, and view system logs. A handy “traffic meter” allows you to observe upload and download activity and individual client connection times. Dynamic QoS is used to prioritize gaming and streaming traffic on your home network. The interface is not as graphic and “Fun to use” as other implementations but, seriously, how much time do you want to spend configuring QoS? It gets the job done. Unfortunately, access to Parental Controls requires setting up an account with OpenDNS which is not a bad service to have if you are concerned about security and anonymity on the Internet. On the positive side, the R8000P supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant right out of the box.
Respectable Performance
When tested against comparable routers such as the D-Link Ultra AC3150 and the Asus RT AC86U the Netgear Nighthawk X6S R8000P was not an outstanding performer. It fell slightly below both at close proximity on both the 2.4GHz and 5Ghz bands. Speeds past the 30-foot mark were also slightly behind both the D-Link and Asus. The X6S turned the tables on its competitors when it came to throughput and file transfer speeds. So it becomes a showdown between throughput or Wi-Fi speed – your priorities are up to you. The deciding factor may be that the Asus and D-Link only offer dual-bands while Netgear is a tri-band router with a third 5GHz band that adds 1625Mbps of bandwidth to your home network.

Final Verdict
The Netgear Nighthawk X6s (r8000p) is a great choice for anyone looking for a high-performance long-range wireless router. It offers support for 802.11ac Wave 2 wireless speeds, which can reach up to 1,000 Mbps. Additionally, it features Beamforming technology, which can improve performance in crowded areas or near objects that may block signals. Finally, it’s a bit expensive compared to other routers on the market, but overall it’s a great option.
