Asustor AS4002T NAS Design

The old Asus diamond pattern has been replaced with a sharp hexagonal design that’s pleasing to the eye. The front cover can easily be removed and replaced using magnets built into the cover and case. The drive bays are tool-free and hot-swappable. The drive bays slide in and out easily by flipping a handle to free them and fasten them to the enclosure. Pretty blue, green, and purple LED lights are lined up just below the power button. There is also a single USB 3.0 port in front.

To make up for the lack of HDMI and I/O ports found on some NAS systems there are two 1GB Ethernet ports that support link aggregation, a second USB 3.0 port, and a 10Gb Ethernet port.   Asustor AS4002T | Network Attached Storage + Free exFAT License | Personal Private Cloud | Home Media Server | 10GbE Port, 1.6GHz Dual-Core, 2GB RAM DDR4 (2 Bay NAS)

Features

The Asustor AS4002T NAS sports a Marvell Armada 7020 dual-core 1.6GHZ processor. As of this writing, the Marvell Armada CPU does not have support for hardware transcoding. That may be a bit of a disappointment for PLEX enthusiasts. Memory is roughly four times that of the Synology DiskStation DS220j with 2GB of DDR4 and 512 of flash memory. RAID types supported by the AS4002T are Single Disk, JBOD, RAID 0, and RAID 1. Detailed descriptions of these RAID types and how to use them can be found in Chapter “” of my free eBook. The AS4002T’s Operating System is called Asus Data Master or ADM for short. It’s very intuitive and Windows-like in its appearance and functionality. Configuring RAID drives, editing folders, and downloading and installing apps are very easy to perform.

Asustor AS4002T NAS Setup

This is one of the simplest NAS setups you’ll find. Unlike many NAS systems setup is started with an installation CD. Once your drives are in, the device is connected to your network and the CD is running setup automatically locates and identifies it. You then click on a red button and click next to download the ADM software. Once the OS is downloaded the NAS will initialize and format the new drives. It will then reboot to complete the configuration. Once it’s back up you can select “1-Click Setup” to automatically select a RAID configuration based on your preference of performance or reliability. If you’re the type who doesn’t like wizards doing things automatically you can choose to do it manually. Once your selections are made it will take some time to configure. Relax and have a cup of coffee. Asustor AS4002T | Network Attached Storage + Free exFAT License | Personal Private Cloud | Home Media Server | 10GbE Port, 1.6GHz Dual-Core, 2GB RAM DDR4 (2 Bay NAS)

Performance

Asus is known for performance and reliability. The Asustor AS4002T NAS is no exception. The AS4002T’s file transfer performance was slightly edged out by the QNAP TS 251 yet topped Synology’s DS718+ which is an $800 system. These are excellent results for an affordable NAS system.

Conclusion

This NAS lives up to the ASUS brand’s reputation in terms of performance and design. You’ll find a multitude of ASUS and 3rd party apps to keep you engaged in the evolution of your Awesome Home Network. Tool-less installation and the CD are nice touches. If you’re a home user looking for excellent file transfer speed, backups, file sharing, and can live without PLEX (Note: Other Asustor NAS devices do support PLEX) the AS4002T is a great option.
