Description
Eero Pro Mesh Wi-Fi System is a powerful, reliable, and easy-to-use broadband router that promises to provide strong signal coverage in your home. Unlike other routers that use a single antenna, the Eero Pro Mesh Wi-Fi System uses several antennas to create a more robust signal. The Eero Pro Mesh Wi-Fi System also includes an automatic mesh network feature that creates a network of connected devices.
Design
The Eero Whole Home WiFI system is very flexible and is available in 3 flavors. The Eero system featured in this review features a central Eero Box unit that connects directly to your ISP’s modem and two Eero Beacons that plug directly into AC outlets in various locations in your home and also serve as night lights. They may resemble extenders or Powerline nodes but these are full-fledged Whole Home Mesh WiFI nodes capable of 1,000 square ft of coverage.
There’s also the option of a less expensive Eero Mesh home system with 3 Dual-Band Eero Mesh nodes or a more expensive Tri-Band Eero Pro WiFi Mesh System with multiple LAN ports.
The central Eero gateway unit is small and simplistic in its design. It won’t catch any eyes but that may be a good thing if you don’t like devices with blinking lights and ugly antennas messing up your decor. There’s a small LED indicator embedded in the plastic on top which makes it easy to see its connection status at a glance. The main “box” has two Ethernet ports – one for the WAN and one for local devices or switches and a USB-C port for power. Unfortunately, there are no USB ports available. This means if you want to print or add storage devices you’ll need a network printer or NAS storage device.
Eero Pro Features
The 2nd Gen Eero features a quad-core 700GHz processor which is an upgrade to its 1GHz dual-core processor. RAM and flash are the same. Eero also added a 3rd band and support for MU-MIMO. These additions open up an entirely new lane for your network traffic to travel which more focused and stable WiFi speeds.
The Eero delivers 240Mbs on the 2.4Ghz band and 600Mbps on both 5GHz bands. Of course, now that Eero has been purchased by Amazon it allows for Alexa integration which will allow you to run controls like turning off the LED light, turning off Internet access, and even finding your mobile phone with voice commands.
Eero refers to its satellite devices as “beacons.” The beacons are slightly smaller than the main gateway unit and plug directly into a wall’s AC outlet and even provide a night light. While the main Gateway unit has 3 bands the beacons are dual-band devices that support the usual 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies.
You can control your Eero Mesh network with any iOS or Android mobile device. When the app is first launched it displays a convenient network map of all your devices and notifies you of any issues. This is all done in plain English and not techno talk.
Basic parental controls come built-in on the Eero system but if you want the more advanced Eero Plus service you’ll need to purchase a subscription. The Eero Plus system also offers protection against malware and viruses. You may not need this additional protection if you already have it installed on your computers and devices. Unfortunately, the Eero Plus system does not offer any sort of Quality Of Service controls. This is a drawback only if device prioritization is important to you.
Performance
In close proximity testing the Eero Pro Mesh system was slightly faster than the TP-Link M5 Deco and slightly slower than the Linksys Velop. At 30 feet the dual-band Eero beacons had considerably more range than the Tri-band gateway which is probably due to the overhead needed on the gateway device to run the beacons.
At 30 feet the results were similar to the close proximity tests. The Eero was slightly faster than the TP-Link Deco and fell behind when matched up against the Linksys Velop.

Conclusion
If you own the original Eero Mesh WiFi system you’ll love the 2nd Gen version because of its similarity and increased performance. The mobile app is also one of the easiest to use. On the downside it is pricey and brand loyalty may be the only reason to get one when you can get slightly better performance for about $50 less with the Linksys Velop.
